7 Ways to Save Money on Laundry Without Even Trying

Let’s be honest — laundry is one of those chores that adds up silently. From detergent and dryer sheets to energy bills and wear on your clothes, it’s easy to overlook how much it actually costs. But with just a few smart changes, you can cut laundry costs and keep your clothes looking great for longer.

1. Wash in Cold Water

Most laundry doesn’t need hot water. Switching to cold washes saves energy and helps clothes last longer — especially darks and delicates. It’s one of the simplest switches that immediately cuts your electric bill.

2. Use Less Detergent Than Recommended

Detergent companies want you to run out faster — no surprise there. But most clothes only need half the recommended amount (especially with modern machines). Too much soap can actually build up in fabric and cause smells!

3. Skip the Tumble Dryer

Whenever you can, air dry your laundry. Whether it’s a drying rack indoors or a sunny spot outside, skipping the dryer saves money and protects clothes from shrinking, fading, and wearing out.

4. Use Dryer Balls Instead of Sheets

If you do use the dryer, ditch the disposable dryer sheets. Wool dryer balls last for months, cut drying time, and naturally soften fabric without the chemicals.

5. Wash Full Loads (But Don’t Overload)

Running small loads wastes water and energy. Try to wait until you have a full load, but avoid stuffing the machine — it won’t clean properly and could strain your washer.

6. Clean the Lint Filter Every Time

A clogged filter = longer drying time = more money wasted. Plus, it’s a fire hazard. Take 10 seconds to clean it out before every load — your dryer will thank you.

7. Make Your Own Detergent or Use Budget Brands

Homemade laundry detergent is surprisingly easy and super cheap. If DIY isn’t your thing, try out store-brand detergents. Many work just as well as name brands (especially if you follow tip #1 and use cold water).

Small Habits = Big Savings

You don’t need to overhaul your life to save money — just tweak the habits you already have. Laundry is something most of us do every week, so these tiny changes really add up.
